Add a healthy punch to your summer cocktails

Summer is perfect for patio chit-chats with close friends and annual family BBQs. If you enjoy cocktails during these special gatherings and want to keep it healthy, I have three refreshingly vitamin-boosting cocktails for you to try.

Sea buckthorn juice is packed with essential nutrients, including vitamins A, C, and E and several B vitamins (B1, B2, B6, and B9). These nutrients can provide health benefits such as boosting the immune system, improving skin health, and supporting overall well-being, so using sea buckthorn juice as a mixer adds great flavour and offers a nutritional boost to your cocktails.

Did you know that B vitamins cure hangover symptoms?

Okay, so these vitamins won’t magically remove the fatigue, headache, and overall crumminess we feel after consuming too much alcohol. However, B vitamins can help alleviate the dreaded “hangover” symptoms by supporting energy metabolism, stabilizing neurotransmitter function, aiding liver detoxification, reducing oxidative stress, managing homocysteine levels, and supporting the immune system. Although B vitamins address some of the metabolic disruptions caused by alcohol, proper hydration, nutrition, and rest are also essential for recovery.

So, if you are attending a summer get-together and want to boost your body while boosting your spirits, here are three delicious healthy cocktails with a splash of sea buckthorn juice to get you up on the right foot the next day.

Seaberry Sangria - close up

Healthy Summer Cocktail #1. Seaberry Cider, Basil, Sweet Mandarin

  • Add ice to a small rock glass.
  • Fill the glass halfway with dry cider (I used my homemade seaberry cider – find the recipe below)
  • Then, juice a sweet mandarin (or navel) orange and pour the juice through a fine filter into the cider.
  • Add a splash of sea buckthorn juice (add more or less to personal taste)
  • Finally, add some crushed fresh basil leaves and some seaberries to garnish.
Seaberry cocktail - Maple Vodka and strawberries

Healthy Summer Cocktail #2. Maple Vodka with Seaberry, Strawberry, and Rosemary

Maple syrup is a Canadian staple, and its beautiful sweetness added to Vodka is the perfect complement for fruity cocktails. With no need for extra syrups or sugars. You can combine Maple Vodka with various freshly muddled berries and herbs, but I find sea berries, strawberries, and rosemary’s unique flavours and aromas particularly refreshing.

  • Muddle together a mix of seaberries, strawberries, and rosemary leaves with a bit of water in a shaker.
  • Add ice cubes and 1.5 ounces of Maple Vodka
  • Add 1 ounce of Sea buckthorn juice
  • Shake vigorously for about 30 sec.
  • Strain into a lowball glass with ice.
  • Top with a splash of sparkling wine (or soda water).
  • Garnish with a frozen strawberry and some seaberries.

Healthy Summer Cocktail #3. Gin, Seaberry, Passionfruit

In this one, I combined passionfruit’s tropical sweetness and seaberries’ citrusy tartness to my favourite Flora Adora gin. Feel free to use any gin that pleases you.

  • Add the fleshy seeds of one passion fruit to a small glass and muddle for about 1 minute. I like to use the Grenadilla passionfruit, but the more tart purple variety will also work.
  • You can either leave the passionfruit seeds in the bottom of the glass or strain the resulting juice through a fine mesh filter into a cocktail glass over some ice.
  • Add some ice to a shaker.
  • Add 1.5 oz of gin and 1.5 oz of seaberry juice to the shaker and shake for roughly 60 sec.
  • Then, strain the gin mixture into the cocktail glass.
  • Drizzle a tiny amount of honey over the top if you desire more sweetness.
  • Finally, garnish with a sprig of fresh herbs and some seaberries.

There are many ways to use sea buckthorn juice. Whether you’re soaking up the sun on a patio or enjoying a family BBQ, these three healthy summer cocktails are a delicious way to incorporate extra vitamins into your drink. Sea buckthorn juice not only adds a unique flavour but also packs a nutritional punch. From the crisp Seaberry Cider to the tropical blend of Gin, Seaberry, and Passionfruit and the sweet and aromatic Maple Vodka with Seaberry, Strawberry, and Rosemary, there’s a cocktail for every preference. Enjoy these drinks and feel good knowing you’re sipping on something both tasty and beneficial. Cheers!
